Canopus Pawpaw
A new cultivar selected by Tom Wahl at Red Fern Farm in Iowa from a seedling of ‘Susquehanna’ × ‘Shenandoah’ (Peterson genetics). Named after a bright southern-hemisphere star, as part of Wahl’s “Stars of the Southern Sky” series from his south orchard plot.
 
A late-season variety noted for very large fruit (typically 300–450 g, occasionally larger), rich yellow flesh, and low seed content. Flavor is richly tropical and excellent—often ranked among the best modern cultivars, with complex notes of banana, mango, pineapple, and vanilla.
 
Extremely heavy producer. Seed count can increase if planted near high-pollen varieties, so companion planting matters for true low-seed performance.
